Jim Lee, X-men, X-men covers

Marvel did a reprint of good old X-Men #1, but with the four separate covers as one complete wrap-around. It’s been re-colored as well, and on high-quality paper. The inside cover (pictured here) is a second poster, and Jim Lee drew a number of additional two-page spreads for the interior. The coolest one is the one with all the villains.

Collector’s Guide: From X-Men #1, edition 1E wrap-around.

Marvel did a reprint of good old X-Men #1, but with the four separate covers as one complete wrap-around. It’s been re-colored as well, and on high-quality paper. Nice treat. We’re still looking for a frame that fits this bad boy so we can completely nerd out.

Yes, we found a copy in our top-secret 50-cent bin, and took the staples out and everything before taping it to the office wall. Maybe you don’t want to obsess that hard, but you can view the magic right here and at least right-click to make it your desktop for the day. The inside cover is a second poster, and Jim Lee drew a number of additional two-page spreads for the interior. The coolest one is the one with all the villains.

Marvel published Fatal Attractions in 1993, a six-chapterĀ X-Men saga complete with wrap-around covers and holograms! Where are all the holograms now, I ask you? WHERE?!

But I digress. The mind-boggling complexity of this x-travaganza might put you off, if you are not into x-tensive sub-plots of 1993. So let’s skip all that and just rock the covers and holograms!

The big highlight of the story? Magneto gets fed up with our favorite mutant and rips all the adamantium out of Wolverine’s body! That’s gotta hurt! It was also the first time we discovered the claws were not implants but a part of Wolverine’s body — even without the adamantium.

If you like this Wolverine hologram below, you’ll love my scan of the hologram cover to Wolverine #100.

Collector’s Guide: From the Fatal Attractions series; Marvel, 1993.

Individual issues:
X-Factor #92
X-Force #25
Uncanny X-men #304
X-Men #25
Wolverine #75
Excalibur #71

Rocking the holograms with Wolverine #100. This issue also came in a non-hologram version. This thing is so damned cool we wish the whole BOOK was done in holograms! Dude, you can see his adamantium skeleton in there! Gaze in awe and then check out more of our X-men Holograms, our X-Men Covers, or our extensive Wolverine Gallery.

This Must Be the Galactic Core – Storm Goes Alien!

Storm rocks hard — and not just because she used to wear a mohawk! Storm went toe-to-toe with Dr. Doom and won (Uncanny X-Men #145-147), even if she did get suckered into dinner with Doom first. Wearing only a bikini, she wrestled an alligator and knifed its a$$ good (Classic X-Men #22). If she weren’t married these days, we would totally ask her out.

Of course, being taken over by aliens tends to put a strain on a relationship. But it’s nothing Storm can’t handle! Behold how Ororo taps into the power of the galactic core to destroy the alien gestating in her body.

Collector’s Guide: From Uncanny X-Men #165.
– Also included here: the Mike Mignola cover from the reprint in Classic X-Men #69.

Wow, Dr. Doom sure has a way with the ladies. He wines them, dines them, then furtively gropes them on the cover of the magazine while they’re passed out! No wonder everyone wants to kick his ass.

In this scene from Uncanny X-Men #145, Storm cooks up a plan, and Dr. Doom cooks up dinner! Ororo is not yet the awesome leader she would become by the time she took that title from Cyclops in Uncanny X-Men #201. Here, her inexperience leads her into making eyes with Doomsie over a cocktail, then falling victim to his treacherous plan!

Collector’s Guide: From Uncanny X-Men #145.

Wolverine in the Savage Land clawing the bejeezus out of dinosaurs — one of our favorite themes here on Mars! Feast your eyes on Alan Davis art of our favorite reptile-slashing mutant from Canada! Alan Davis also drew Sabretooth’s first appearance and the night Wolverine became god, among other fine stories.

Alan Davis and Chris Claremont produced about twenty issues of Uncanny X-men, between the Chuck Austen run and Ed Brubaker’s run. Long-time fans recall it was not their first run on Uncanny X-Men.

Welcome to the Wolverine Gallery! It’s an ongoing project, so just click Wolverine Gallery to see everything in this virtual exhibition!

Today’s portrait of the world’s baddest mutant comes from a collection called Wolverine: Evolution of an Icon. Evolution of an Icon reprints some of Logan’s most historic moments.

This cover to Uncanny X-Men #205 by Barry Windsor Smith disturbed us when we first read it. Even more unsettling was Barry’s interior art — twisted, hideous amalgamations of evil machinery and distorted flesh. Uncanny X-Men #275 featured an awesome three-page fold-out wrap-around cover. Today’s post features that cover — and let me tell you, it wasn’t easy, what with my scanner only being big enough for one page at a time. So take advantage of my hard work, click on the image, blow it up to relish the detail, and set it as your desktop background.

Uncanny X-Men #275 sets the artistic high water mark for the team of Chris Claremont and Jim Lee. Very soon, their take on Marvel’s mutants would earn X-Men #1 the record of highest sales for any one comic book, ever. The records still stands.

Collector’s Guide: From Uncanny X-Men #275. Reprinted in X-Men Omnibus Chirs Claremont/Jim Lee/Marc Silvestri #2.

Collector’s Guide: From Classic X-Men 21. This reprint added gnarly dinosaur art to the interior and back covers, with a fun back up story: Colossus versus a Tyrannosaur!
