gone fishin richard corben penthouse -001A friend mailed us a copy of Penthouse Comix a couple years ago and it blew our minds. While we’ve been aware of the… other pleasures of Penthouse since adolescence, we never thought to check out their comics magazine.

This issue has a cool story by Richard Corben. It harkens back to classic horror tales by Berni Wrightson, and puts a new spin on the theme of eroticized underwater adventures. Kevin O’Neill also illustrates a disturbing story in this issue, and even Galactus makes an appearance.

Given the graphic sexual content of most of these stories, we leave them to your imagination, only presenting what we find to be a tasteful story of mermaids and mortality.

Collector’s Guide:
– From Penthouse Comix Vol 2 #14, August 1996.
Story & Art by Richard Corben

Challengers of the Unknown, Keith Giffen, occult, Swamp Thing

Keith Giffen really pulled out all the cosmic stops to draw Challengers of the Unknown in 1977 and 1978. Also featuring Deadman and Swamp Thing. Here are some especially awesome pages to blast your brain!

This issue packs immortal demons from space, muck monsters from the bog, gorgeous gals in distress, sonic ray guns with sweet visual effects – you can’t ask for much more entertainment factor! Giffen’s entire run is a blast, and the art gets even weirder as it goes along.

Collector’s Guide:
– From Challengers of the Unknown.
The entire story runs from #81-87, the final issue.

Image Comics, KISS, occult

In the late 1990s, Image Comics put out 31 issues of Kiss Psycho Circus. Possibly a promotion for a Todd McFarlane line of licensed toys, Psycho Circus features some mind-shredding artwork from the Image studios.

If you like KISS, and you think seeing them as celestial beings of great power might kick some major ass, then this is right up your alley! A few of these issues have really solid stories, but mostly it’s about the WOW factor of the artwork. Dig some of these covers, splash panels, and 2-page spreads!

My Comic Shop has the single issues of Kiss Psycho Circus for about a buck a piece.
