The images in today’s gallery come to us courtesy of the archives at The Supergirl Project. Some of these public service announcements from the National Social Welfare Assembly have graced our virtual pages here before. But something unexpected happened last year when we put one on Twitter. It got picked up by someone from the NSWA, now known as the National Human Services Assembly. It turns out they were collecting these old ads for their archives! Last we heard, they had gathered quite a collection. Enjoy a few below. Superman even makes a couple appearances!

This public service announcement from the National Social Welfare Assembly appears in an old issue of DC’s The Brave and The Bold. It reminds young readers that Native Americans had their own thing going on before Europeans landed in North America to wipe out millennia of indigenous culture. Although, it kind of glosses over that part…

Here in the 21st century, some readers will cringe at the use of the term “American Indian.” But, that was the language in 1963. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 hadn’t even been passed at that time, and our country was still mired in centuries-old traditions of racism. You have to give some credit to the NSWA for at least attempting to broaden cultural horizons in a positive way. That organization doesn’t seem to run comic book ads anymore, but now goes by the name National Human Services Assembly.

Radioactive isotopes are fun and friendly to everyone. Eat toxic mutant tobacco plants grown with atomic fertilizer! It probably won’t mutate our kids and grandkids for generations before turning the Earth into a charred and poisonous cinder.

With Summer Solstice just around the corner, you might be thinking of taking a vacation this season. Before you do, take a minute to review these handy tips from The National Social Welfare Assembly.

Despite being about fifty years old, this public service announcement captures all the modern joys of vacationing: sunburns, speeding through scenic vistas in a death machine, and trashing our nation’s parks. They did forget, though, about getting smashed on cheap, canned beer and blaring crappy music at top volume to annoy other campers! Take it away, Terry.

GED, high school, memoir, National Social Welfare Assembly

High school sucks. It sucks now, it sucked in the twentieth century, and it was probably sucking since the beginning of time, which must have been at least a couple hundred years ago. This 1963 ad from the National Social Welfare Assembly reminds you that the only thing that sucks more than going to high school is not finishing it.

But I considered dropping out, once upon a time. I thought about just acing the GED test and getting on with my life. You know, leaving behind the dull drudgery of a conformist indoctrination camp to enjoy the dull drudgery of a conformist labor camp with paychecks.

I never did it, though. I toughed it out — okay, I slacked it out — and got out a semester early by taking some correspondence courses. One of the courses was a literature credit. It was about science fiction books, including such classics as The Martian Chronicles and Stranger in a Strange Land. I had already read all those books by age eighteen! Twice! So, it was a pretty easy course. And soon, I got my release papers. While all my friends wrapped up their senior year, I got a night job working 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. That might sound rough to you, but I loved it! Up all night, sleep all day! Yes!

Reflecting on those times, I wonder how life might have been if I just opted for the GED — missing out on those soul-crushing final years of petty teachers and ridiculous assignments and waking up at 7:30 to face a day of extreme boredom. And, I learned a little something about the GED, too. Did you know it was originally designed in 1942 for military personnel and veterans?
