Nexus #3, a magazine-sized publication by Capital. This was the last of the magazine-sized Nexus books. Numbering would restart at #1 when Capital made Nexus a regular-sized book in full color. Despite having a playable record in it, the retail price of this comic book is under $10 most of the time. The interior has been reprinted more than once, but the original comes with a dramatic back cover by Frank Brunner and an editorial on the inside cover.

Want one? Well, we just sold ours on eBay. But you can buy your own copy of Nexus #1-3 (Capital, 1981-82).

amazing heroes 58 (6)

These pages from Amazing Heroes #58 recount the failure of Capital Comics and the subsequent rescue of Nexus and Badger by First Comics. First would eventually have its own problems, but Nexus would survive to join the illustrious ranks of Dark Horse Comics. The stand-out treat of this article, aside from the poignant footnote in comics history, is Jeffrey Butler’s page of Badger and Ham the Weather Wizard surfing.

That masterpiece of madcap mayhem comes from an early Badger story where Ham summons a tidal wave to attack a corporation that wants to chop down his magical oak tree. He’s a druid, you see and… you know what? Trying to explain Badger to someone who hasn’t read it just makes you sound like you are speaking a foreign language. So let’s get down to it and rock today’s 80s flashback!

The feeling of selling off parts of our beloved Nexus collection can only be expressed in one word. GYAAAH! Let us memorialize the departed.

2022 Update: We got these back, eventually. It took a few years, but it was every bit as glorious as joining Nexus on his next mission. “At last!”

In addition to having an awesome superhero lair, or even a heroic house, superheroes usually get a car. It’s the American way. Nexus has one, too. What? That’s not a car pictured above? Sure it is — and we don’t mean the little one shown for scale, either! Like a dream image, it represents our fantasies about our noisy, four-wheeled invention. Nexus has a complete living quarters in his ship, making it more like an RV that can travel through black holes. Pretty handy when you are dispensing justice and cruising for adventure all over the known universe.

These pages come from Nexus #6, published by Capital Comics originally. Dark Horse recently reprinted the issue in the Nexus Omnibus.

Below, long-time Nexus colorist and eventual cover artist Les Dorscheid appears in a rare profile page from the same issue.

Les was an integral part of the visual appeal of Nexus. And if you don’t have an appreciation for his skills yet, just dig this single page of Jil and Sundra’s first journey in their new spaceship.

The issue also featured an order form for these sweet mini-posters. The Nexus poster was totally worth the $4.

Finally, this issue of Nexus is where Nexus and Judah meet, for the first time, Mike Baron’s other creation from the Capital days: Badger. While many comics writers of the day deconstructed superheroes to the point of questioning their sanity, Badger had no questions about it at all. He was simply insane. Stark raving mad.

Enjoy this scene where Nexus and Judah, struggling for survival on a strange planet full of wonders and terrors, have an unexpected dinner guest. This three-part story, The Trialogue Trilogy, remains a favorite Nexus story of ours.

Nexus – First Issue!

Indie Comics, Mike Baron, Nexus, Nexus Archives, Nexus Magazine, Steve Rude

When we call this the first issue of Nexus, we mean it was the first issue published in standard comic book size. But it’s really the fourth adventure of Nexus. You can pick up the first three stories in the Nexus Magazine from 1982. They’re oversized, in black and white, and one even has a record with the Nexus theme song. Rock!

The Original Nexus collects all three Nexus Magazine stories in an oversized graphic novel format. It’s a good buy. Steve Rude’s company reprinted all three of the Nexus Magazine stories and the first four Capital issues in Nexus As it Happened. For $10, it’s a great way to catch up or jump on board with Nexus. It basically contains the same material as Dark Horse’s Nexus Archives #1.

Enjoy today’s scene from the first issue where Nexus and his lady Sundra try to have a nice dinner but end up meeting Judah Maccabee. He happens to idolize Nexus.

Collector’s Guide: From Nexus #1; Capital, 1983.

We found many things to love about the artwork in this two-issue cross-over between Nexus and Magnus Robot Fighter by Mike Baron & Steve Rude. Here are the black and white “background story” pages and a colorful showdown between executioner and murderer.

Collector’s Guide: From Magnus Robot Fighter Nexus #1-2.
