You know we love a good double splash page. Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen delivered the goods in their sarcastic superhero parody Nextwave: six — count ’em — SIX consecutive two-page spreads. Here, our heroes approach their final confrontation with a secret evil mastermind. But first, they have to slug and blast their way through monkeys in Wolverine suits, dinosaurs with laser eyes like Cyclops, and a bunch of MODOK heads that look like Elvis Presley!

Elvis MODOKs? I really missed the boat on that series.

Worth it just for the Elvis MODOKs. And… for a page with a bit of ‘untold story’ about Monica ‘Captian Marvel’ Rambeau frying domestic animals with her photon powers as a child.

It was a lot of fun. Ellis ripped on all the Marvel cliches with much more humor and silliness than in his darker works. We wouldn’t recommend it to people who aren’t already fans of the superhero genre. But then again, the same could be said about Watchmen.
