“Rite of Spring” is one of our top ten favorite comic books of all time, easily. Psychedelic love in the swamp, baby! Yes! Where do we sign up?!
Abigail “Abby” Arcane and Swamp Thing declare their love for each other and find a unique way to consumate that love on the transcendent, spiritual level. This story also has some historical significance. It often receives credit for “launching the entire Vertigo line” at DC by boldly going off the Comics Code Authority label.
Collector’s Guide: These black-and-white scans come from Essential Swamp Thing #15, which reprints the Saga of the Swamp Thing #34. The full-color version was reprinted in the Swamp Thing TPB #2.

When I hear people talk about this issue, they mostly say things like “oh yeah, plant porn, really interesting”.
I really don’t understand that at all. I think this is beautiful scene and something a lot of movies, comics and pretty much everything fictional is missing now. Nowadays, love scenes are almost always just “show model, that can act in underwear”, or “yeah, they love each other and had sex, lets move the plot” and people are forgetting, that love SCENES itself can be part of the story.
These two people didn’t just did it in a rather unusual way. These characters didn’t just were together, because plot needs them to and its not just really wanting to have sex with each other. They deeply and honestly love each other in the most natural and pure way. A lot of people say, that love is just natural function, that its just attraction + friendship. They are right. But it doesn’t make it any less beautiful, or serious bond.
This well-written, beautifully drawn, and pretty much stand-alone story moves the characters so much forward.

We agree, Benuben. Thank you for visiting! Yes, this scene is about far more than the physical act. Abby and Swamp Thing achieve a union of their minds and souls not just with each other but with the larger world around them. And that points to a higher psychic function of the act of love: the act of unification and the dissolving of boundaries between people and the world. Thank you for reading and commenting!

Well, cats and kittens, I ❤ the Swamp Thing. This is too Cosmically cool not to share! It works on so many levels. The creators were before their Time, indeed! Fantastique pen and ink!
‘I Gave Myself to You’ seems written for the Thing.

This issue pretty much the best thing in the entire history of comics. Not mind-expanding, more like soul-expanding. Elegant and bizarre, trippy and raw. It’s scary and sad that pretty much nothing in the entire genre even compares in any way to it.
