When Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created Captain America in 1941, they probably did not imagine the multi-billion dollar franchise he would become. Cap all but disappeared in the 1950s, nearly fading into the permanent fog of obscurity. The Avengers #4 changed all that for good in 1964.
